On April 5th and 6th, Agora BIM 2022 took place in three different cities: Madrid, São Paulo and Birmingham.
During two days, participants had the chance to attend, both in-person or via streaming, a BIM event that offered free masterclasses, workshops and networking. With the aim to discuss the latest methodologies and BIM software solutions applied to each phase of a construction project, Agora BIM 2022 brought together the most distinguished experts in the field. The first day of Agora BIM 2022 kicked off on April 5th in two cities: Madrid and São Paulo. In Madrid, the Agora BIM was organized with the collaboration of the Colegio de Ingenieros Técnicos de Obras Públicas Zona (CITOP), and took place at Casa Cantabria. The event started with opening words from the organizers, followed by keynote presentations from the guest speakers.
Agustí Jardí, Director of the Zigurat’s Máster Internacional BIM Management Ingeniería Civil. Infraestructuras y GIS, was the first speaker. Jointly with Ferrar Masip from BIMcollab, Augustí spoke about how to structure the information of a digital asset and manage information in an infrastructure project. Ferran Massip, on the other hand, guided participants to create a federated model in BIMcollab.
The second part of the event was led by Óscar Liébana, Director of the Zigurat’s Máster Internacional en BIM Management. In his presentation, Óscar highlighted the characteristics a "Common Data Environment" must have, and addressed how to classify the information. This talk was complemented by Javier Casado from Autodesk Construction Cloud, who talked about the quality, security and information flows within Autodesk Construction Cloud.
María Serrano Espada, Vice-dean of CITOP, closed this BIM event by thanking the speakers and emphasizing that the BIM methodology is crucial to be at the forefront. "The only way for us to become competitive, efficient and effective professionals is to be at the forefront of all these elements.”
The Institute of Engineering at São Paulo hosted the Brazilian version of this BIM event, which received Washington Luke, Rogério Lima, and Marcelo Nonato dos Santos as guest speakers. The discussions revolved around BIM uses and flows applied to infrastructures. In this framework, Washington Luke opened the debate with a presentation on the importance of the use of BIM in infrastructure projects. In addition, he also talked about the regulatory framework of this methodology and gave some examples of cases of success. He asserted that "BIM increases reliability in cost estimate and in meeting deadlines, reduces errors and unforeseen issues, ensures greater transparency in the procurement process, and increases the quality of the projects. If 50% of the construction industry implements BIM by 2028, the GDP of the sector will grow by 7%, according to a study conducted by ABDI in 2018."
In the same vein, Rogério Lima spoke about the use of open standards in infrastructure projects, and highlighted many of the advantages of their use for the construction industry. Marcelo Nonato dos Santos closed the day with a presentation focused on the processes involved in preparing a 4D plan using Revit, Navisworks Manage, Synchro PRO and MS Excel softwares, once we have devised the BIM Model and a detailed planning of the construction project.
On April 6th, the Zigurat team landed in Birmingham for the last day of Agora BIM 2022. Stefan Mordue, Paula Mota and Bruno Mota were the keynote speakers at this BIM event, which counted on the presence of Dr. Mohammad Mayouf, Senior Lecturer and Course Leader at Center for the Built Environment within the Engineering and the Built Environment School at Birmingham City University, and with the collaboration of the company LogiKal Projects, a global leader in project controls, enhanced business intelligence, and BIM solutions. The lectures addressed topics such as technology and information, as well as issues such as the future of the construction industry. In this regard, Stefan Mordue, Director of Zigurat’s Master’s in Global BIM Management, presented a clear outline of what the future of construction could look like in the next 50 years, and how we can handle challenges that are yet to come. In his words, the biggest challenge is "preparing students for roles that don't yet exist, using a methodology that hasn't yet been invented to solve problems that we don't yet know are problems.”
The topics discussed by Paula Mota and Bruno Mota were devoted to the uses of BIM in the construction industry. Paula Mota, Professor of Zigurat’s Master’s in Global BIM Management, focused on BIM Model Uses, in theory and in practice, and their benefits for the sector. Relatedly, Bruno Mota, Director of Zigurat’s Master Internacional em Gestão de Projetos na Construção, talked about some of the possible improvements that could be implemented in projects in order to make them more efficient. In this regard, making reference to a survey conducted by LogiKal in which 1029 participants and more than 15 companies from 65 countries took part, Bruno Mota pointed out that "three ways to improve a project are: improve communication, simplify the process, and have clear leadership. Projects with a high level of process compliance are 2 times more successful, and projects with fully integrated processes are 2.8 times more successful than those in silos".
