Technology experts have only recently begun promoting BIM technology as the modern method for delivering building projects. At CCC, however, the BIM center has been effectively using BIM for more than a decade to deliver numerous types of infrastructure contracts such as roads, highways, railways, metro lines, bridges, tunnels and subsurface utilities. The majority of mega projects worldwide are of infrastructural nature. Construction business stakeholders give high value to infrastructure construction due to many factors such as magnitude, criticality, effectiveness, publicity, the involvement and interaction of all sectors in receiving benefits and consequences for the success or failure of such projects. These types of projects affect our day-to-day life, development, the growth of our societies and overall comfort.

The nature of these projects, as most of them are extensible, complex and difficult to simulate, added challenges to the effectiveness of adopting BIM and making use of this technology for building and advancing infrastructure assets digitization. CCC is an international mega contractor that has been delivering various types of facilities for more than 65 years. A large portion of CCC’s work is in building infrastructure such as airports, roads, ports, bridges, tunnels and railway construction. CCC’s approach to BIM is completely built on the experience, expertise and solutions developed in-house over the past several decades. CCC’s accomplishments in the BIM field are recognized not only by reputed manufacturers of BIM software, but also by its competitors. The Dubai Mall, constructed by CCC, is the largest shopping center in the world by total area. It features over 13 million sq. ft. (344,000 m2) of leasable space. The mall is home of the Dubai Aquarium, which features a 270-degree walkthrough tunnel and the world’s largest viewing window. This module is organized into three (3) blocks and it is structured in a consistent way in order to introduce the students to the BIM ecosystem in the AEC industry, to the main application of BIM in infrastructure projects and to main features of the authoring/modeling environment.

The main goal of this module is to orientate students in the field and to help them acquire general and comprehensive knowledge of mainstream BIM workflows, practices and processes in the field of infrastructure projects.

Students will also understand the structure of the whole program and will gain practical experience through relevant exercises and cases studies.

Students’ evaluation will happen through the delivery of technical reports and BIM deliverables mainly through the AECOsim Building Designer environment. Demonstration of artifacts from all software platforms will also take place.

This module is organized into three (3) blocks which will serve as building units for the successful completion and delivery of the student’s final project.

The completion of this module is mandatory. All of the software platforms mentioned above will be used in order to facilitate final project needs and requirements. Evaluation of students’ deliverables will happen at the end of the module and students will receive relevant feedback throughout the team and individual sections of the project.

ON-SITE VISIT TO ABU DHABI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT MIDFIELD TERMINAL BUILDING

Participants in this program will have the opportunity to visit the Abu Dhabi International Airport Midfield Terminal Building site, currently in development by CCC. This project is one of the most relevant and complex infrastructure projects in the world, and offers you the exclusive opportunity to complement your education with Zigurat in a practical way. Your class will have the chance to meet one another and together you will observe how numerous construction companies work together with the latest BIM technology, cooperating and collaborating to achieve unprecedented results.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The USD$3.0 billion Abu Dhabi International Airport Midfield Terminal Building project was awarded to the TCA Joint Venture (TCA-JV) of TAV, CCC and Arabtec. The terminal consists of 7 million square feet (650,000 square meters), which includes passenger and cargo facilities, duty-free shops and restaurants. It will more than double passenger capacity at Abu Dhabi International Airport to 47 million people per year. A comprehensive BIM solution has been implemented across all disciplines and stakeholders of the project, unprecedented for a project of this scale.

CCC utilizes a mixture of Bentley software and their own proprietary in-house software, all of which is taught within the Global BIM Management for Infrastructure Projects program.
